BREED 77
+ Susperia + Illuminatus
@ The Sheffield Leadmill
Due to poor organisational skills on the part of the original venue The Corporation, this show was moved or down graded if you will to The Leadmill who did their best to utterly screw up the entire night, from set timings, to the sound, to the promotion. In fact when Illuminatus got on stage the crowd was minimal and one of the UK's greatest bands was forced into a set of twenty minutes. All of these negatives aside Illuminatus provide a great start with their post rock Doom fueled political rantings going down well with the increasing crows, and indeed one of the comedy factors of the night was the vocalists announcement that 'time is money and these people have to sell drinks to chavs'. Illuminatus have released 'the Wrath Of The Lambs' and whilst finishing with 'Wargasm' do an amazing job of promoting it and in my opinion cement their place further as one of the best bands around. Up next from Norway came the mighty Susperia who wow the crowd with songs such as 'Urge' and 'Chemistry', the melodic and charismatic 'Cut From Stone' and the always popular and excessively bouncy 'Wild Child'. Susperia set the bar even higher with a clinical and thoroughly entertaining set under difficult circumstances and get the crowd ready for the coming act.
A coming act which due to poor stage management and sound took an hour to appear, but once Breed 77 hit the stage it is all action, even though the sound still wasn't ready and the stage was too small for the band, both points readily mocked on stage by Paul Isola. All of this aside thouygh all the classics are thrashed out with his usually bouncy enthusiasm and the relatively large crowd that has not assembled go nuts as they always do. With hits slamming out from 'Cultura', 'In My Blood' and even their debut album, as well as a sneak peak at some material from the as yet unreleased 'Insects', Breed 77 dazzle the crows and leave them begging for more, putting all the negative aspects of the night behind them.
