LORD VICAR/FEAR NO PAIN (Church Within Records)
Could it be that I, a mere mortal hold in my hands a nugget of the purest Doom?
It sure as hell does as Peter Vicar (now Peter Inverted!) as back and doing what
he does best which is delivering top notch Doom Metal!
After the split of Reverend Bizarre which seems to last forever, I mean come on,
they released nearly as many records after the split as they did when they were a
going concern it's great to hear those lo fi crunchy guitar tones once again.
Aided and abetted by Christian Lindersson (COUNT RAVEN,SAINT VITUS) handling
vocal duties and Gareth Millstead (CENTURIONS GHOST) on drums Fear No Pain
does not disappoint.Dispensing with the more awkward 20 minute long epics
of the good Reverend for a more up tempo feel each song is delivered with
simple efficiency simply dripping in cross shaking doom goodness.
A couple of things need to be addressed though and the first thing that struck
me about this record is that the drumming is somewhat subdued and a little
hesitant which was a real shock as Gareth is a total destroyer whilst in the
Ghost and the second thing is Christians' somewhat 'unique' vocal style
which takes a few listens to get used to but when you do they are actually
one of the best things about this record with his Ozzyesque wail lending
a certain arcane quality especially on the mournful closer 'Funeral Pyre'.
If your a fan of SOLSTICE,COUNT RAVEN,APOSTLE OF SOLITUDE,PAUL
CHAIN,CIRITH UNGOL and of course REVEREND BIZARRE then snap this
up as this is total Doom Metal annihilation with no quarter given.
