Work Starts On The Echo

A new mid-rise residential block as part of a £100 million mixed use project is underway in Leeds with contractors on site doing early foundation work in preparation for construction proper.

Proposed in 2006, it is a joint venture between Barratt Homes (Leeds) and Rushbond PLC is called the Echo and has been designed by DLA Architecture.

The scheme will sit on one of the main eastern approaches into Leeds acting as a gateway landmark. Within will be 600 square metres of new office and retail plus 450 new apartments including 163 in the main tower that rises 15 floors height. We reckon that should work out at about 46 metres in height using the 3 metre per floor rule of the thumb.

The Echo is of typically post-modern brick and terracotta design that Leeds is now more than used to and seems to have become the prominent local style.

It features curving facades and a corresponding curving roof line creating an almost knife edged look at the sharpest point where floor to ceiling glazing runs up the edge of the tower. Both ends of the tower also have a generous amount of external balconies for residents whilst penthouse occupants will have their own roof terraces.

Both Rushbond and Barratt have had previous form in Leeds already having been responsible for various parts of the huge Brewery Wharf redevelopment scheme that is one of the new projects shaping the centre of Leeds. The Echo however marks the biggest in Leeds yet for both of them.

I have seen the Echo project and I must say that I was pretty blown away. It is quite an impressive piece of architecture, and an engineering marvel. I am including a photo in this post for anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about so you can see it for yourself. Thank you.
