One Hyde Park Apartment Sets Record Sale Price

Candy and Candy have secured a major coup and a place in the Guiness Book of World Records with the sale a new apartment in their One Hyde Park development for a whopping £100 million pounds (196.7 million U.S dollars). Throw in stamp duty on top, and the property price is the first on the planet to go over 200 million U.S dollars.

Situated in the prestigious Knightsbridge district opposite the original luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the living space occupies the top floor of the development providing sweeping views of Hyde Park and the London skyline. It's been designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership, one of the first apartment blocks they have been involved in.

The purchaser is Sheikh Hamad, the foreign minister of Qatar, who's £100 million offer exceeded the £82 million the flat was originally said to be on sale for suggesting that a bidding war went on between potential purchasers eager to snap it up.

As befits such a price tag, it will have all the mod cons for a security conscious billionaire including private lift, bullet proof glass windows, and an underground passage linking it into the Mandarin Oriental Hotel to save him ever having to walk down the street with the great unwashed.

Sheik Hamad is the owner of Al Jazeera who have their headquarters only a few doors down from One Hyde Park. It's understood that the tunnel running under the building actually continues to the French Embassy which is between the Mandarin Hotel and Al Jazeera making it easily extendable for him to walk to work in complete privacy.

There will be approximately 20,000 square feet of space in the apartment, which is almost 2,000 square metres. With these prices the cost per square metre for the space is an impressive £53,821 or 105,871 U.S dollars putting it in a league of its own on the London market. It should be interesting to see if the London Bridge Tower apartments can match this sort of level.

Despite the telephone number sized costs it won't have totally outrageous bills. The Sheik will have to pay a mere £2,062 council tax every year despite it costing 555 average British houses. Who says living in London is pricey?
